Process Development and Scale-Up

Dana Settell and Dan Dobry

BRI-C Instruments, Equipment, and Activity Slideshow

In addition to process-modeling work, process development and scale-up are necessary for a new technology to be applied beyond the laboratory scale. Key members of the Bend Research process development group include Lori Ray, Trevor Wigle, Dan Dobry, and Dana Settell. The main goals of this group include the following:

  • To work with the fundamental science group to reduce new technologies to practice
  • To ready these new technologies for transfer to the BRPPD cGMP facility
  • To follow through to scale-up of commercial processes.

Process development work has focused on technologies such as spray-drying, melt-spray-congealing, fluid-bed drying and coating, and other pharmaceutical manufacturing processes.

An understanding of the chemistry and physical science behind a technology combined with a knowledge of applied engineering have enabled this group to successfully scale up several new technologies for pharmaceutical products. This wider knowledge is gained from working closely with colleagues who work in the fundamental science, applied technology, and process modeling areas, and colleagues at BRPPD and other manufacturing sites. The slideshow link shows an overall view of various projects and activities at Bend Research’s pilot facility.
